Carbon monoxide (CO) is formed when combustion is incomplete. It is a very dangerous gas as it is invisible and odorless so it is not detectable by the sensory organs of the human body. It\u2019s a lightweight gas, with almost the same density of air (0.97), so it spreads homogeneously in space. CO belongs to the category of chemical gases that cause suffocation. When you breathe CO, you absorb it from the blood and it progressively reduces the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to the tissues. A prolonged stay in an infected environment with high concentrations of CO can be fatal. More specifically, some of its side effects in relation to exposure time are:<\/p>

  1. Concentration of 50ppm for 8 hours: Maximum permissible exposure limit, no serious side effects.<\/li>
  2. Concentration 200ppm for 3 hours : Feeling unwell, slight headache.<\/li>
  3. Concentration 600ppm for 1 hour : Severe headache.<\/li>
  4. Concentration of 1500ppm for 1 hour : Severe headache, nausea, discomfort.<\/li>
  5. Concentration 2000ppm for more than 30 minutes: Severe headache, nausea, discomfort, loss of balance.<\/li>
  6. Concentration of 2500ppm for more than 30 minutes: Unconsciousness.<\/li>
  7. Concentration of 4000ppm for more than 1 hour: Death.<\/li><\/ol>

    In Greece, installation of CO detection systems is mandatory, according to MD 40589\/2138\/04 (Government Gazette 1102\/B\/20-07-04), in underground parking areas of medium and large size (over 350 square meters) intended for public use.<\/p>
