Automatic Fire Extinguishing & Water Misting Systems AQUASYS
The Austrian AQUASYS has been, for more than 25 years, the leading company internationally in the research & development, manufacture and supply of of firefighting systems with high-pressure water mist.
At the cutting edge of innovation, its highly efficient product “High Pressure Water Mist System – HPWMS”, is certified according to the EN 14972-1:2021 standard (Fixed firefighting systems – Water mist systems – Part 1: Design, installation, inspection, and maintenance / Fire Extinguishing Order 15/2014 GOVERNMENT 3149/B/24-11-2014 CHAPTER A’ Article 3 Permanent active fire protection systems 3.4.1. Automatic fire extinguishing systems with water).
Water mist - The superior extinguishing agent
The effect of the Aquasys firefighting systems is based on the exceptional properties of high-pressure water mist. The water is driven through stainless steel pipes via specially designed nozzles. This reduces the droplet size from a diameter of 1 mm to 50 – 200 µm, creating an extremely fine water mist, which has a much larger water surface area. This huge water surface area is able to tackle fires in a very efficient way by using following effects:
Cooling
High-pressure water mist creates a highly effective cooling effect due to its large number of extremely small droplets. The water mist quickly reduces the fire’s energy and cools the source of the fire.
The vaporisation of 1 litre of water in one second corresponds to a cooling capacity of approx. 2.25 MWs.
Intertisation
The heat of the fire vaporises the water droplets and expands their volume many times over. The sudden vaporisation inertises the atmosphere in the immediate vicinity of the source of the fire. The water mist displaces the oxygen the fire needs to exist.
The vaporisation of 1 litre of water creates 1673 litres of water mist.
Shielding
In the event of a fire, the fine droplets of the water mist produced ensure a dense, reflective wall of water mist, which reduces the fire’s thermal radiation. This helps to contain the fire and contributes to the cooling effect, as well as actively supporting the washing out of flue gases. All of these properties increase the possibility of escape from the affected area.
Environmentally friendly
Pure water as an extinguishing agent is completely safe for people and the environment. This means that it can be used immediately, without hesitation and without any prior warning time for almost all fire classes. Water also has the highest energy requirement for it to be transferred into another physical state (ice, water, steam), so it is able to quickly remove a large amount of energy from the fire.
Universal
The huge reaction surface of water mist means that it has outstanding extinguishing properties and that it can be used in fire classes A, B, C and F. The water can also be combined with additives in order to adjust the extinguishing or temperature characteristics to the local requirements.

Fire protection plays an important role wherever large numbers of people gather in a concentrated area. Shopping centres, with high customer numbers, place high demands on fire protection. Multi-level sales floors, huge shopping areas and high atria represent particular challenges that are expertly handled by the AQUASYS firefighting systems.
|
Hotels, shopping centers and large venues are only a few of the places where many people can be found every day. Traditionally, for employees and customers extensive parking facilities are offered for example in multi-storey underground garages and car parks. Defective cars, arson or unauthorized storage of materials are presenting a major risk of fire. Rapid smoke emission and panic can be the result. AQUASYS firefighting systems for parking garages ensure an efficient and space-saving system for the protection of such hazards, thus increasing safety for the entire building complex.
|
Hospitals, care centres and other healthcare facilities are home to patients and staff while also having to accommodate a large number of visitors. Given the huge investment costs and the great importance of these facilities within society, these kinds of buildings require reliable protection. AQUASYS firefighting systems fully meet the high demand for safety and reliability in one compact package. An intelligent system design and the benefits of a high-pressure water mist firefighting system ensure direct and locally contained firefighting in emergencies.
|
The high power density and efficiency of a high-pressure water mist firefighting system and the resulting significant reduction in the space required in utility rooms, installation shafts and suspended ceilings, as well as the removal of otherwise standard booster stations on various floors, provides additional usable commercial and office space.
|
The protection of unique historic buildings, museums or archives with irreplaceable contents or structures requires a modern as well as gentle approach to firefighting to ensure that these are preserved for future generations. The low amount of water used means that these cultural assets are protected and possible water damage is minimised. The system is also easy to integrate thanks to the small pipeline diameters. |
Large train stations and metro stations with limited emergency escape options place great demands on safety installations. AQUASYS firefighting systems allow the structure as well as emergency and escape routes to be protected, while also providing protection for people fleeing and the arriving rescue teams. At the same time, the installation of an AQUASYS firefighting system enables other fire protection requirements to be significantly reduced. |
The uninterrupted, continuous operation of the server systems is a basic requirement for the reliable backup of stored data. Extinguishing systems that are currently in use, such as gas, generally require the ventilation for the entire server room to be switched off. This means that servers also need to be switched off. In various full-scale fire tests, AQUASYS was able to demonstrate its targeted and effective firefighting capabilities, even with the continued operation of the ventilation system. At the same time, the use of water mist means that the server rooms can be accessed at any time, even in the event of a fire. |
Industry
Robust & reliable
Hydraulic fluids, lubricants and fuels, which can ignite due to hot products or technical processes, require a reliable firefighting solution. The verified suitability of high-pressure water mist for fire classes A, B, C and F, which has been demonstrated in numerous fire tests and customer-specific demonstrations, enables complex production facilities and industrial plants to be protected using a single piece of system technology. The three-dimensional propagation of the fine water mist ensures highly-effective firefighting and its intensive cooling effect prevents the fire from reaching other areas.
Preventing failures and minimising down-times are both essential tasks for machine and system operators. Turbines, generators, transformers, as well as hydraulic systems and cable ducts are just a few of the areas of application of energy technology that can be efficiently protected with AQUASYS firefighting systems. |
To ensure maximum system availability at high-quality industrial plants with an elevated fire risk due to the production conditions, a reliable and robust fire-fighting system is required. By using water, which is harmless to humans and technical equipment, impurities in the process and consequential damage can be prevented or minimised. The three-dimensional spread of the high-pressure water mist immediately reaches hidden areas, and provides efficient protection. |
Testing components, engines or other parts right up to the very limit of engineering capabilities entails a significantly elevated fire risk. Such fires can lead to the failure or loss of production-related test capacity, or even destroy valuable measuring equipment. This may in turn lead to incalculable operational downtime and, consequently, delays in development orders. The high-pressure water mist technology can fight fires immediately and efficiently, allowing operations to recommence quickly. Common areas requiring protection include component, engine and gearbox test benches, test cabins and other test rigs for a wide range of applications. |
In food processing facilities, hygiene is the absolute priority. This makes the use of water ideal for firefighting in this sector. The unique extinguishing effect of water mist is perfect for combating solid-substance fires as well as liquid fires, such as deep fryers or oil baths. As a natural extinguishing agent, the minimal water damage can be quickly removed to ensure high availability. |
Conveyor belts with different materials ensure rapid transport and a high level of automation in production and recycling plants. This often also involves the transportation of highly flammable material. With its high-pressure water mist system, AQUASYS is the ideal solution for the protection of recycling plants and waste sorting facilities, a<s well as for countless other conveyor belt applications. The outstanding cooling effect of the water mist and the rapid response of the high-pressure system ensure the optimum prevention of major fire damage. |
Tunnels
Effectively & inconspicuous
Millions of people worldwide use tunnels for road traffic as well as for rail traffic every day. Due to the immense construction costs as well as the high number of people, fire protection is an important part to ensure safety for human beings as well as buildings. In addition to the passive fire protection, active systems are installed to ensure the required safety level. Besides of these high fire loads also the escape routes for persons as well as the operational issues for the fire brigade are critical topics, which have to be controlled.
Extremely high fire loads of up to 200 MW and the mastering of the resulting temperatures of over 1000 ° C are just some of the requirements that arise in the road tunnel. Effective personal protection by immediate activation of the system as well as effective protection of the building increase the safety for the users. In addition, the AQUASYS fire fighting system for tunnels, which has been tested in several real-world tests, ensures high availability of the infrastructure for operators. Due to specially developed and patented nozzle solutions, it is possible to master various fire scenarios such as solid or liquid fires. The use of high-quality materials and coating processes takes account of the special requirements of the aggressive environment as well as the high temperature differences of the installations installed in the tunnel. |
The requirements for railway tunnels differ because of the fact that railway vehicles are railbound and usually controlled by professional drivers. Despite the increased safety, accidents or malfunctions can not be ruled out and constitute an equally high risk for users. Thus escape routes are often not sufficiently dimensioned or a failure of the tunnel infrastructure would lead to immense costs. Therefore, underground facilities such as railway tunnels also require special precautions like fire-fighting systems for the entire tunnel or only for emergency stations with installed stationary water mist fire-fighting systems in which a burning train can stop. |
