FIRE SAFETY SIGNS

Fire Safety Signs functional in adverse conditions
To ensure that fire safety signs used in buildings are effective throughout their lifetime, but especially during an emergency, several important factors should be considered.
Therefore, choosing the right size, type, location and material of construction of fire safety signs can be vital in helping to respond to fires in building facilities more quickly and is a prerequisite safety element of all workplaces. To choose the right size of Fire Safety Signs, it should be done according to the minimum and maximum viewing distance.
In the chart below, we apply the minimum letter height rules to the fire extinguisher sign showing the spot size required to comply with the prescribed safe viewing distance. (Fig.1)
Deciding on the appropriate point type is also very important and you can choose from a variety of shapes, the most common being Type 1, Type 2 and Panoramic symbols (Fig.2):
Type 1 signs are signs intended to be installed parallel to the wall. These are the most common types of signs used, but these can only be seen when standing right in front of them. Therefore, while these signs offer a good solution for smaller areas, there are better options for larger areas.
Type 2 signs are intended to be placed in a flag position and are therefore the ideal solution for runways as they will be easily visible to people walking from both ends of the runway.
Panoramic sign, it can be perceived from 180° angles and therefore it is also a good solution for locating the fire equipment signs in corridors and will be the best choice for wider zones in the facility since they can be located independently from the user’s position in that area.
The selection of the correct location for the installation of Fire Safety Signs should also take into account the intended maximum viewing distance for each sign and that the field should always be open in front of them. To achieve this, fire safety signs should be installed in a high position. The sign placed at a high level locates the fire equipment, in this case a fire extinguisher, reducing the chance of it being blocked by something or someone.
Choosing the material to make Fire Safety Signs may be the most important decision in ensuring that the signs will be effective when they are needed most, such as during a fire event. Unfortunately, the majority of Fire Safety Signs in use in the country are still made of non-luminescent (fluorescent) materials. The reason is mainly due to cost, but this can prove counterproductive. During a fire emergency, the primary focus should be on evacuating, but it’s essential to also recognize the significance of firefighting equipment, as flames could potentially obstruct the path to the exit. Hence, the utilization of Photoluminescent (fluorescent) Fire Safety Signs can play a crucial role in finding fire extinguishers and other firefighting equipment in challenging situations, such as when there is smoke and power outages. In these cases, the rapid detection of firefighting equipment will help to extinguish the fires and resume the evacuation, but it can also help to extinguish small fires that could otherwise turn into uncontrolled fires and pose a threat to building facilities and life itself.
In the event of a blackout, photoluminescent fire safety signs will prove effective, whereas non-photoluminescent fire safety signs simply will not work.
