FIRE-FIGHTING SYSTEMS WITH WATER MISTING

AFT with its patented water misting technology has managed to combine two of the greatest natural resources for its extinguishing products: water and air. This revolutionary technology surpasses conventional firefighting devices in its efficiency and environmental safety.

Today, AFT has grown into a global leader in the development and application of innovative low pressure firefighting technology & CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System).

AFT offers a variety of firefighting systems, ranging from portable backpack systems to vehicle cart systems, used by firefighters around the world.

AFT has been internationally recognised for its pioneering inventions and innovations and has been awarded gold medals at the Eureka Invention Fairs in Brussels and Geneva and the Merlion Prize in Singapore.  AFT’s engineering team specialises in tailoring the company’s technology to the needs of its customers to create customised firefighting products that fully meet their needs.

AFT’s manufacturing and R&D facilities are located in Germany, with regional offices in Malaysia, Turkey, India and the UAE.

The American Fire Protection Association NFPA 750 standard, NFPA, defines water misting as “a water spray of which 99% of the total volume of the liquid (Dv0.99) is broken down into droplets of less than 1000 µm in size at the minimum design operating pressure of the water misting nozzle.”

Existing water misting systems produce droplets with a size between 50-999 µm. Based on the pressure used to generate droplets, the classification of water misting systems is as follows:

  • Low pressure: Systems operating at pressures less than or equal to 12 bar

  • Medium pressure: Systems operating between 12 and 34,5 bar

  • High pressure: Systems using pressures greater than 34,5 bar

With over 20 years of experience, AFT has been able to develop a patented water misting production system. By using the kinetic energy of the compressed air mixed with the extinguishing liquid in the specially designed multi-nozzle system located in the spray gun, the decomposition of the extinguishing liquid into micro-droplets of 100-150 µm is achieved, which results in 40 times more cooling compared to the conventional water extinguishing method (droplet diameter of 5000 μm), with a droplet launch velocity reaching the speed of sound.

The water misting droplets create an enlarged surface area (almost 40 times larger) compared to a conventional water jet. This results in rapid cooling due to extensive heat absorption, while the vapour produced expands 1640 times in volume, thus penetrating the atmosphere around the fire.

Each product is tested for compliance with various international standards and performance parameters. AFT products are protected by various numbers of patents.

Mode of operation and advantages

Fogging “attacks” two of the three elements of the fire triangle: heat and oxygen. In this way it is achieved:

    • Cooling: the water misting system optimises the surface area of the droplets, thus maximising heat absorption and thus cooling.
    • Oxygen removal: The droplets evaporate quickly and swell, thus depriving oxygen from the fire’s focus.
    • Radiant heat decay: The droplets provide effective protection from radiant heat as energy is removed from the fire due to cooling by the water misting system.

The advantages of water misting, compared to conventional fire suppression methods, are that:

Much less extinguishing fluid is required than current extinguishing methods. It is typical that a 50lt wheeled water misting unit has the same extinguishing capacity as a 1,000lt fire truck!!!

Collateral damage from firefighting is minimized due to a large reduction in the use of extinguishing fluid

Reignitions are prevented.

AFT water misting systems operate at a low working pressure of 7.5-8.5 bar, whereas without the patented technology a pressure of about 100 bar would have to be used to achieve the same result. This makes them safe, both for users due to reduced recoil, and for people and animals that may receive the spray beam.

The water misting allows for rapid extinguishing of fires due to the dual effect of cooling and fire suppression.

Portable Water Mist Systems

AFT specializes in the utilization of water misting & CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) technology in portable forms, which has opened new avenues in firefighting around the world.

Portable firefighting systems offer significant advantages:

  • Ideal for dealing with small fires,
  • Ideal for small outbreaks of fire, such as small outbreaks in small towns and villages.
  • Rapid response to a fire event
  • Rapid response to fire, up to 23 hours of operation, up to 23 hours of autonomy
  • Flexibility
  • Accessibility
  • Increased operational power – a firefighter can tackle a fire alone

Portable water misting firefighting systems operate at low pressure, with negligible recoil, thus providing safety to the user.

Their gun can be set to Jet and Spray mode , and a special e – nozzle gun is also available as extra equipment for dealing with fires in the presence of an electrical charge.

The patented water misting technology imparts high velocity to the droplets to get them to the heart of the fire from a safe distance, offering protection to firefighters, police, military and security forces.

Assembled Fire Extinguishing Systems for Vehicle Trolleys

The assembled firefighting systems are designed to convert any vehicle into a rapid intervention firefighting system. The systems are designed to the highest quality standards and are compact, with a very low centre of gravity, allowing them to be fitted to the majority of pickup models on the market.

Vehicle cart systems enable a significant reduction in intervention time, better accessibility and effective firefighting, thus contributing to the control of fires in the early stages.
