PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION

Passive fire protection is a set of measures and technologies applied to buildings and structures to prevent or delay the spread of fire and smoke, as well as to protect people and material infrastructure. Unlike active fire protection, which includes systems such as smoke detectors and automatic fire extinguishers, passive fire protection does not require human or mechanical intervention to operate during a fire.

A manufacturer of fire protection systems in Germany, Rudolf Hensel GmbH was founded in 1922 in Hamburg as a varnish and paint factory. Initially, its product range consisted mainly of paints specifically for use in the marine industry and in the 1950s, the company established itself as a market leader in Scandinavia as well. Seeking new challenges, Hensel recognized the growing importance of passive fire protection at an early stage and began to focus its development activities on coatings that offer fire protection. This company focus was recognised in Germany as early as 1953 with the first patents, followed by national and international certifications.
